Recognizing Student Achievement
Student’s are making adequate progress if they can demonstrate the following:
  • compute extended addition facts
  •  give equivalent names for whole numbers
  •  identify values of digits in whole numbers
  •  compute basic addition facts
  •  identify maximum, minimum, range, and mode of a data set
  •  solve multidigit addition problems
  •  use data landmarks and bar graphs to draw conclusions
  •  solve multidigit subtraction problems
Vocabulary

digit - One of the number symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the standardbase-ten system. 


line plot - A sketch of data in which check marks, X’s, or other marks above a labeled line show the frequency of each value.

This line plot shows the number of correct response for each student .

maximum - The largest amount; the greatest number in a set of data.

minimum - The smallest amount; the smallest number in a set of data.

mode - The value or values that occur most often in a set of data.

partial-differences method - A way to subtract in which differences are computed for each place value(ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) separately.  The partial differences are then combined to give the final answer. This is just one algorithm for subtraction.

range - The difference between the maximum and the minimum in a data set.

tally chart - A table that uses marks, called tallies, to show how many times each value appears in a data set.

trade-first method - A subtraction algorithm in which all trades are done before any subtractions are carried out. We affectionately refer to this method as the "mom and pop method," since most parents learned how to subtract this way.

whole number - The counting numbers, together with 0. The set of whole numbers is {0, 1, 2, 3 ...}
