American Revolution - (1775) the war in which the American colonies won independence from Great Britain

canal - a ditch dug across land that often connects two waterways

lock - a water elevator used to raise and lower boats
skyscraper - a very tall building

mass production - a way of making large quantities of products

Declaration of Independence - the document that declared the United States to be free from Great Britain

United States Constitution - a plan of government based on the idea of democracy, in which the people choose their leaders.

mill - a factory in which people make products out of raw materials

wage - a payment of money for work

Lowell National Park
There are five steps in turning cotton into cloth. In the 1700s, all of these steps were done by hand. At the Lowell mills, these steps were done by machine.
